This is a post I wrote a few days before turning thirty
The thought of turning 30 for a lot of people is a rather scary prospect because they worry that they are getting older and/or whether they have reached their objectives in time. I know for me, I kept trying to avoid counting down the time as I was too scared to face up to it.
We also expect that by the time we turn 30 we would have met the love of our life, be married, be expecting children and be successful in our professions. If this is not the case for you then its ok and you can admit this to yourself that not everybody reaches their objectives by this age. I certainly haven’t. I believe that there is this so-called stereotype around turning 30 which we are all subjected to. As long as you feel in yourself that you are on the road to success then it does not matter which age you are.
Many of us fear that by the time we reach 30, we won’t be able to change our career directions or start a new hobby or even go back to university. We feel that the older we get, the less opportunities and chances there will be available to us.
It is amazing how we let a number rule our life. We should not determine our ambitions on the basis of reaching a certain age. My thirtieth birthday is nearing and I am accepting the fact that life won’t change for the worse but will only get better.
Turning 30 is the chapter of new beginnings and being excited about what the future will bring. It is important to be open to what may potentially happen as anything can change. A year ago, a friend of mine told me that his career only took off after the age of 30 as he spent the first 30 years trying to get to know himself better.
How do you prepare yourself for the new decade of your life?
Don’t feel anxious or afraid about turning 30 since it’s only a number. Someone mentioned to me once that ‘you are only as “old” as you feel’. This may sound like a cliche but I find it to be very true.
There is no point in comparing your life with your peers. Ok, you may not be married or have kids at this point in time but that does not mean that things will stay this way.
Turning 30 could be the catalyst for you to take off in whatever you set out to achieve. If you previously struggled to take control of your life, then this could be the time when you finally do. I know for me that this has been difficult but I am finally taking control of my life! You are never too old to be the person you want to be!
Throw yourself the best birthday party so when you look back on this day, you will remember the super occasion you had. I definitely know I will!
I leave you with a quote by the legendary Spanish film maker Luis Bunuel who once said…
“Age is something that doesn’t matter, unless you are a cheese”
